An arch softens a room, frames a view and adds a quiet sense of occasion. Here is how to use one well.
What an arch does to a room
Most rooms are made of straight lines. A single curve breaks that rhythm, draws the eye and makes a space feel taller and gentler.
Arched mirrors
The simplest way to bring in an arch. In our Kanpur clubhouse, a row of arched mirrors turns a plain yoga studio into its most memorable room.
Niches and backlit recesses
An arched niche with soft backlighting gives a wall a focal point. We used one behind the treatment chair in our Gurgaon clinic.
Doorways and openings
An arched opening between two rooms frames what lies beyond and makes moving through a home feel considered.
Panelling and joinery
Arched panel tops on wardrobes, doors or wall mouldings add a classical note without heavy ornament.
Getting the proportion right
- Keep the curve a true half-circle or a gentle segment
- Repeat the same arch shape rather than mixing several
- Let the arch stand against a plain surface
- Light it softly from the side or behind
